March Missions Project

Pennies for the Patrick's

Bruce and Melanie Patrick became Awana Missionaries in 2001 and have committed themselves to help reach the children of Alabama for Christ.  Today there are nearly 1.2 million children living in Alabama, and even applying the best case scenarios, only about 250,000 of them even attend a church.

In order to reach the other nearly 1 million children for Christ, Bruce and Melanie need your help.  March has been set aside as Pennies for the Patrick's month to allow Awana Clubs from across the state to join in and help them raise the funds that they need to be able to continue this mission they know God has called them to.

Will you and your clubbers join the effort? The goal for this year's Penny Project is $35,000.  This means that, for Bruce and Melanie to reach their goal, and with every Awana club participating, every club across the state would need to raise about $100 each.  This is definitely an attainable goal if everyone participates.  The $35,000 will help them cover their monthly expenses as giving has been decreasing over the past few years and their account has suffered during this time.

Here are some ideas to help motivate your clubbers:

1. Pie-in-the-Face - Set a goal for the Clubbers to reach. If the goal is reached the Commander or Commander and Directors end up getting a pie in the face.

2. String-A-Leader - Everyone is allowed to vote for the Director or Leader they want to 'string-up'. Each penny is worth one vote. The two with the most votes ends up covered with string you can get in a can. Many other variations of this may be used.

3. Duct-Tape-A-Leader - Clubbers vote (as in number two above). Clubbers get to duct tape winning leader to the wall. Have leader stand on a one or two foot stool while being duct taped. When finished, leader will stick to the wall. After a minute or two help the leader down.

4. Club vs. Club or Boys vs. Girls or Clubbers vs. Leaders or Four Team Competition - See who can bring in the heaviest amount each week. Pennies are put in plastic buckets or plastic jugs and weighed on scales.

5. Have A Heart - A large white heart is made for each club and displayed on the wall. For each dollar bill or quarter (you decide) Clubbers receive a small red heart to put on his or her club's large white heart. At the end of the month, club with the most hearts win. You could also do this with boys vs. girls.

6. Kiss The Pig - You may not want to do this one, but some clubs have. If the goal of how much money to be brought in was reached, the Commander had to kiss a pig. In another club the Pastor would have to kiss the pig and in another club if different levels were reached the Directors, Commander, Pastor. When the goal they set was reached each one did kiss the pig. (In fact, one Director remarked that it was like kissing her husband!). Like I said, you may not want to do this one, but the Clubs that did were very enthusiastic about it!

7. Dunking Booth - One Awana Club had a Dunking Booth the last night of their Penny Project. If they reach $100 a leader sits on the Dunking Booth. If they reach $200 a Director would be added. If $300 another Director is added to the list of those that sit on the Dunking Booth. If $400 the Commander, if $500 the Pastor.

8. Project Change Have clubbers bring in change. Week one clubbers bring in pennies & nickels, week two dimes, week three quarters, week four half dollars & dollars.

9. Congregation Challenge – Challenge the congregation to see who could bring in the most pennies. If congregation wins the Commander gets a pie. If the club wins the pastor gets a pie.

10. Shave-a-Head - This is a brave one! When the clubbers reached their goal, the Commander or a leader gets a buzz cut or his head shaved bald. Clubbers love it.

11. Section-a-Thon – Allow clubbers to enlist sponsors to donate based on the number of sections that they complete during the month. This is one that we used in our club that was very successful.

12. Matching Gifts – Someone in your Awana Leadership or congregation may want to challenge your people in giving by providing a matching gift.
